Recognize New Hep B Screening Code

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requests Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) implement changes to screening for HBV infection, which will be covered with the appropriate U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved/cleared laboratory tests according to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) regulations. Contractors shall recognize a new HCPCS code, G0499, for Hepatitis B screening in non-pregnant, high risk individuals. This includes hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) followed by a neutralizing confirmatory test for initially reactive results, and antibodies to HBsAg (anti-HBs) and hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc).
