Attention To Clinical Lab Improvement Amendments

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requests that Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) process claims with attention to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) waived tests approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Claims must be edited at the CLIA certificate level to assure that Medicare & Medicaid only pay for waived tests under CLIA. A QW modifier identifies claims submitted by facilities with a valid, current CLIA certificate of waiver.
